| Dental Whitening |
There are several to whiten you teeth.
The simplest at home technique appears to involve special tooth pastes, white strips and solutions that can be applied to your teeth. These products are available from many pharmacies and results appear to be variable.
The dentist can also whiten your teeth ”in-house” in about 1 ½ hours. A protective layer is applied over your gums and then a strong solution is applied to the teeth and a light is used to activate or accelerate the process. It is good to desensitize your teeth and ensure that there are no large caries prior to starting this process. The solution may aggravate the nerve if caries are present or teeth are already sensitive. It is good to have an examination and x-rays to assess pre-existing dental problems prior to tooth whitening.
Another process involves the construction of a precision “solution application device”. The dentist usually takes an impression and has this device made by a dental laboratory. Then you are given a solution to apply to your teeth for 2 hours a day for 2 weeks.
Indeed the “in house” technique followed by the two week treatment gives the most predictable results. As a “Rule of Thumb” - the more yellow the teeth are at the start of treatment the more dramatic nicer the results will be. Grey is more difficult to change than yellow. Some teeth can get quite sensitive during the process. There are some techniques that can be used to reduce sensitivity. There is some rebound of original color with all bleaching techniques. The time of rebound is variable. Dr. Svoboda can speak to you about this technique.
