September 2013: New Cost Management Plan, Meet Our New Dentist and More!

Back to Work! Back to School! Back to Business!

The summer has been short, but we have been working hard at ParkPlace Dental Centre.

We now have a team of 5 dentists with overlapping skills and interests - Drs Emil Svoboda, Donna Jez, Mary-Anne Svoboda, Kristina Lepholtz and Ziad Omar. Dr. Omar is our in-house orthodontist. It requires a team effort to give you the best in continuous care during extended hours.

Are You in Autumn Mode?

Perhaps it's the shorter days or maybe the self-imposed routine, but everyone seems to be on a mission to get... somewhere. For many of us, autumn feels more demanding than summer. Real or imagined, the added pressure can contribute to stress. While the immediate links may not be obvious, stress and oral health are related. Stress has been linked to bruxism (grinding and clenching), canker sores and even gum disease.

Relax. Breathe. Start your day off with breakfast. Think positively about the day while you brush your teeth and floss in the morning. These two to five minutes can help you to reduce stress as well as ward off some of the effects of stress on your oral health.

Time for Your Cleaning

Is it time for a cleaning or to have unfinished dental work completed?

If your dental benefits are based on the calendar year, your maximums may not roll over into the New Year. Our calendar fills up quickly this time of year, so we encourage you to call today if you need an appointment before the New Year.

Have a safe and healthy month,

The team at ParkPlace Dental

New Cost Management Plan

We feel that the best way to manage dental costs is through a vigorous preventative care program. However, we recognize that teeth can fail and that it can be difficult to manage the cost of treatment. We now have a dental health plan called "DentoPlan". This may be the financial plan you need to help you get the treatment you want.

Please feel free to ask our knowledgeable staff how this plan can benefit you!

The Signs of Periodontal Disease

We are told from an early age that daily brushing and flossing is important, but why?

Having a daily regimen helps combat oral health issues like periodontal (gum) disease. Infrequent oral hygiene and improper brushing can exacerbate these issues, making it easy for gum infection to occur.

Possible symptoms of periodontal disease:
  • Gums that bleed during normal (even gentle) brushing and flossing
  • Gums that are tender, sensitive or even painful to the touch
  • Gums that are swollen
  • Gums that appear shiny or bright red (like in many infections)
  • Gums that are receding
  • Teeth that are loose in an adult
  • Teeth that appear unusually long (due to receded gums)
  • Teeth with excessive tartar buildup along the visible gum line and in the 'pocket'
  • Frequent or continuous bad breath
  • Overall discomfort in the mouth

Breakfast in a Pinch?

Are you looking for a breakfast/snack idea that you can make once and reach for in a pinch?

Granola is the answer!

Homemade granola is a tasty and healthy treat that can compliment your breakfast or work as a snack on its own. Making granola at home allows you to control the ingredients and create it to taste, rather than store bought creations that may contain preservatives and fillers that you don't want or need in your diet.

Back to School!

Believe it or not, the first day of autumn is quickly approaching. Autumn is a wonderful season which offers many outdoor and indoor activities to keep you active. It also means the kids are back in school!

Good oral health starts early. If you have children, then don't forget about our children's practice "ParkPlace Junior, General Dentists 4 Kids". Dr Kristina Lepholtz, Dr Mary-Anne Svoboda and now Dr. Rasha Shaikh are dedicated to treating the smiles of children in a fun friendly atmosphere - in a facility designed "Only 4 Kids".

We would like to welcome Dr. Rasha Shaikh to our children’s practice. Dr. Shaikh graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a Masters in Pharmicology and Toxicology and she earned her DDS at the University of Toronto.

Dr Shaikh loves kids and has a 3 year old cat and a new puppy called Ellie. Ellie is a breed of dog from the Turks and Caicos called a “Potcake”.

We are sure Dr. Shaikh and her family will have a huge positive impact on our children’s practice. Indeed, with Dr. Shaikh’s help, we will be available to provide dental care Monday to Thursday 9 am - 8 pm and Fridays 9 am -5 pm. This will leave your weekends free for fun!

We now offer "Orthodontics 4 Kids".

Dr. Ziad Omar is the Orthodontist at our kid's practice. He has now implemented a screening program to allow us to identify kids that would benefit from preventative orthodontic services. This is designed to reduce the need for future "more complex" treatment.

Again -- an ounce of prevention is usually better than a pound of cure! Dr. Omar is now taking appointments to assess your kids for preventative orthodontic services as well as conventional treatment modalities.
