Periodontics (Gum Disease)

Periodontal disease, or gum disease, affects thousands of Canadians each year and, if left untreated, can result in tooth loss. In fact, gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults.

Most gum disease begins with gingivitis. Since gingivitis is not normally associated with major physical discomfort, the signs are often ignored. If left untreated, gingivitis can develop into periodontal disease, an advanced form of gum disease that affects the gums and bone. During this stage of the disease the bone may begin to deteriorate and pull away from the teeth.

Risk factors for periodontal disease includes, poor dental care, smoking, hormonal changes in female (puberty and pregnancy), diabetes, stress, poor nutrition, mediations, illnesses and genetic susceptibility.

Our dentists at ParkPlace Dental Centre can diagnose periodontal disease. Treatment for gum disease can be surgical or non-surgical in nature. It is best to find out whether you have gum disease as soon as possible as treatment and success of treatment is easier in the earlier stages of the diseas.
